What kinds of sedatives are available?
Nitrous Oxide or commonly called Laughing Gas is extensively used in sedation dentistry. It is an important part of dental anaesthesia. The combination of Nitrous Oxide and Oxygen is safe and effective for managing pain, anxiety in dentistry. In dentistry, Nitrous Oxide is used to relax patients. Almost all patients will be relaxed in 30 seconds or less. Different induction techniques are used for nitrous oxide-oxygen sedation. For a rapid induction, patients take 3 breaths of 70 percent nitrous oxide-oxygen gas mixture. Then the concentration is reduced to 30percent nitrous oxide.
IV or Intravenous Sedation is also called Monitored Anaesthesia Care. It is a type of Anaesthesia that relaxes patients through an intravenous or IV placed in a vein. This sedation refers to the administering of an anti-anxiety drug through the blood during your dental treatment. The IV sedation dentistry relaxed you during the dental session. This sedation is effective in few minutes. You will not experience any pain with this form of dentistry. It involves the administration of benzodiazephines, opioids and low-dose hypnotic agents. IV sedation is also known as conscious sedation for the effect it casts. IV sedation is effective and causes effect much faster than oral sedative, thus ideal for dental procedures.
